Internet Explorer 7 and tabbed browsing with Microsoft CRM
Posted by Mike Snyder on May 19, 2006 |With the new release of Internet Explorer (version 7) just around the corner, we decided to take the beta version of IE for a test drive with Microsoft CRM 3.0 to see what happens...and overall the results look great! All of this testing was performed on a clean install of Windows XP SP2 with Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 (7.0.5346.5).
With Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 installed, we browsed to a Microsoft CRM demo server running our CRM Elements for Real Estate add-on (http://elementsdemo). Microsoft CRM fired up with no problems, and we clicked around without any noticeable issues. As in Internet Explorer 6, double-clicking a record launches a new window as shown below.
However, one of the GREAT new features of Internet Explorer 7 is tabbed browsing. Actually, we got tabbed browsing working with Microsoft CRM last year by using the MSN Search Toolbar. However, using tabbed browsing with Internet Explorer 7 is much much improved. To get Microsoft CRM windows to launch in tabs, you'll need to configure the Internet Explorer Tabbed Browsing Settings so that pop-ups always open up in a new tab (located under Tools - Internet Options). With this setting checked, double-clicking a Microsoft CRM record will launch it in a tab.
Even cooler, Internet Explorer 7 offers a Quick View (CTRL + Q) so that you can view thumbnails of all your tabs in one place!
I do have one minor (and I mean minor) gripe about Internet Explorer 7 and Microsoft CRM. I noticed that when using the tabbed browsing that sometimes I lost the background color on my main window. I experienced this before with Microsoft CRM 3.0 and Internet Explorer 6, but I attributed it solely to running Google Desktop Search on the same machine. However, this is clearly not the case here because we're running a clean Windows XP SP2 install with nothing else on it. Just like before, it's easy to get the color back just by refreshing the window, but it is kinda annoying. If anyone cares, this is an easy problem to replicate. Follow the steps above and launch Microsoft CRM in IE7. You'll notice that the header color is correct. However, if you double-click a record that launches a tab and then click back to the "main" window tab you'll notice that the header color is gone!

Hi!
Have you tried editing an email or somesuch within an IE7 browser window? I ran IE7 on Vista here for a while and the editing of emails within the web interface on CRM 1.2 was impossible. That *might* have been either a Vista or a 1.2 thing, but it might be worth checking that.
Text would disappear, formatting wouldn't work etc.....
Cheers,
Ian Watkins

you got to be kidding me. CRM on my IE7 hangs, jams and crashes. Internally some Microsoft offices and partners have not downloaded IE7 because of the potential bugs.
I do not have the same problems using IE6, not to say the experience was fantastic. MS CRM is still largely raw and has a long way to go, but at least it was stable.
I've tried uninstalling my IE7, reinstalling it, installing it OVER an existing version, etc. If this continues to act up (it'll jam in sales meetings when I'm showing my boss my opportunities! argh!), I'll be forced to use Mozilla, which uses more RAM than IE7 (which was why I used IE7 at home).
Someone got to clear the rainbow again to see the dark sky, man. IE7 has been crashing my CRM so badly, I was forced to use the Outlook plugin!

Sorry Rational Neurotic, but IE7 runs Microsoft CRM just fine. If it's crashing on your machine, I think you're facing a computer specific problem.
You might want to double-check that you're not running into the custom pop-up object error that we shared the hotfix for: http://blog.sonomapartners.com/2006/09/the_end_of_the_.html.

I'm having the same issues with IE 7, and from the Microsoft CRM Forums, it appears there are others as well. Everything works fine, except for when I force pop ups to appear in a new tab, then my machine pretty much locks up. For whatever reason, it only seems to happen when opening Account entities, other entity types work fine. The problem happens on several workstations, so I'm confident it's not a PC specific problem.

No, it's not that. But I can specifically tell you that it is happening to me. It's time to stop glazing over words and really tackle the problem. From what Ben say, it's not just us. If there is a bug, someone has to tell Microsoft.
Everytime something crashes precious time and money (to revive it) is wasted.

Also having a horrible time trying to get CRM to work with IE7. Crashes in just about every conceivable scenario when trying to do anything other than setup a new record or convert a lead.

Thanks for the info. I have a problem. IE7 XP won't let me access my tab browsing settings

I get problems with CRM on IE7 also but only when it first starts up. If open my workspace in Accounts then the delay is minimal, but as soon as I go to Contacts I get a delay of a couple of minutes before I can use it. I can only assume there is some downloading of data going on in the background which is holding things up?

Re Elizabeth's problem - internet explorer having a long delay when first going to the accounts or contacts tab in Microsoft CRM - I found a solution elsewhere on Sonoma. The problem can be due to Google Desktop Search - you need to exclude Web History from the Google Desktop Search Types (located under Preferences).
slow wait pause hang

It could be great with tabs.. But I had issues with importing and exporting customization. Hence had to go back to IE6.

We are having problems with IE tabbing. We did a lot of test on different machines (with windows xp), using tabbing and not using tabbing in IE7. It works fine when tabbing is turned off. But freezes when tabbing is on.
Our users are used to having tabbing and taking it off is going backwards, any solution to this problem?
Thanks,

My presence here is absolutely random. I've been trying to understand all these compiter terms and innovations but it's inconceivable!

This is the greatest forum. I am so happy other people are having the same problems. The work around is definately using IE6. But I have tried clearing cache and cookies, no google desktop and still hangs, but does come back eventually. I'm going to try and use firefox....maybe..

Don't bother with firefox....the Microsoft has ensured we can't use a better browser.

Ok. I lied. CRM on Firefox is THE GREATEST!!!!!!! https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419 is the link to make it work.
No hangs. better font smoothing. AMAZING!

Hi,
I'm actually having problem with Microsoft CRM 3.0, there is a 1 minute delay when opening the modules in the CRM for the first time like in the morning .... could you help me resolve this

when setting up IE7, I set my preferences. I set my default home page to Google, but when I close and re-open explorer window...I still get the run-once set up screen! No matter how many times I try to go through the set up, it will NOT let finish the setup and apply my settings.
